Shinichi Sunagawa appointed Assistant Professor

As from July, 2016 Shinichi Sunagawa will start as Assistant Professor of Microbiome Research at the Institute of Microbiology.

by Ilka Riedel

Shinichi Sunagawa studied Biochemistry (Diploma) and Aquatic Ecology (MSc) in Frankfurt and Bremen, Germany, before he obtained his doctoral degree in Quantitative and Systems Biology (PhD) from the University of California, Merced, USA. He currently holds a position as Staff Scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg (GER).

Shinichi Sunagawa is an impressively productive scientist who studies human and marine microbiomes using metagenomic and bioinformatic techniques. Selected highlights of work as (co-)lead author include the demonstration of individuality of the human gut microbiome based on the first metagenome-wide SNP analysis, a global-scale analysis of the structure and function of the ocean microbiome, and the development of a bioinformatic tool for metagenomic species profiling. In particular, his methods for investigating specific microorganisms by means of large sequence data sets have attracted international attention.

Shinichi Sunagawa's combined expertise in the fields of biochemistry and bioinformatics will make an important and promising contribution to the study of life sciences at ETH Zurich and bring exciting new collaborative opportunities and complementary expertise to the Institute of Microbiology.
